Rumenotomy

A rumenotomy is a routine surgical procedure where the rumen is surgically incised via the left abdominal wall.
This procedure in ruminant is indicated for a variety of diseases including:
  • Bloat
  • Persistant ruminal impaction
  • Foreign bodies lodged in distal esophagus, rumen, and reticulum
  • Traumatic reticulitis
  • Atony of omasum and abomasum
  • Reticular herniorraphy
  • Ingestion of toxins
The approach for incision is the left mid flank vertical incision. 
Anaesthesia is usually accomplished with intravenous xylazine and local anaesthesia. In complicated cases general anaesthesia and casting are usually required.
Procedure
1. Restraning of buffalo calf.
2. Cleaning the region of surgery with soap

3. Shaving the surgery region
4. Injecting the local anaesthesia at T13, L1, L2 and L4 vertebra and inverted L portion for nerve block
5. Incision of different layer of skin and muscles
6. Clipping the veins and arteries to check the blood loss
7. Stitching the peritoneal layer with the skin to check the entry of wastes from rumen to muscles
8. Incision of peritoneal layer
9. Removal of hair ball from stomach
10. Stitching of peritoneal layer of rumen, such that damaged portion goes inside
11. Application of povidine iodine
12. Stitching of muscular layer and then Skin

This was performed at Institute of Agriculture and Animal Science, Paklihawa Campus by students of B.V.Sc & A.H 5th semester under the assistance of Dr. D.K. Singh and Dr. Prabesh Sharma in the campus farm.
